"There is an unmet demand for workers with heritage skills in both the trades and the professions."

Where are the Workers?

Right now, we don’t know how many people make their living or are trained to work in built heritage conservation. There is no systematic collection of human resource data in the built heritage field - not on a national, provincial or local level.

We only know more heritage workers alone are needed to meet the current demand. One study shows that Eastern Ontario alone will need the skills of 900 stonemasons over the next 10 years just to maintain and repair existing heritage buildings.

What Can You Do?

  • • Write your federal MP and ask that Statistics Canada and Human Resources Canada start tracking those working in heritage conservation.

  • • Encourage community colleges to offer courses in the building restoration trades.

  • • Encourage high school students to consider training as carpenters, stonemasons, architects and planners.

  • • Educators and trainers can join the growing heritage professions and trades network: contact Robert Shipley at the University of Waterloo (rshipley@fes.uwaterloo.ca).

  • • Architects and planners can join the Canadian Association of Professional Heritage Consultants (CAPHC).

  • • Take heritage-related courses and training. Request Institutions Offering Heritage Preservation Programs from the Heritage Canada Foundation.

  • • You can invite a restoration carpenter or stonemason to give a demonstration at a meeting of your heritage organization. Invite your city councillors to attend.
