Eastern Ontario alone will need the skills of 900 stonemasons over the next 10 years just to maintain and repair existing heritage buildings.

Renovation is NOT Conservation

Many confuse renovation with restoration or rehabilitation. Renovation often destroys the parts of a building that make up its heritage character.

What Can You Do?

  • • Promote heritage restoration and rehabilitation by skilled tradespeople to others.

  • • Avoid “home renovations” that could damage heritage character.

  • • Hire skilled, experienced workers in heritage rehabilitation and restoration for projects.

  • • Insist that contractors use the Standards and Guidelines for the Conservation of Historic Places in Canada.

  • • Stress “investment in heritage conservation is an investment in skilled trades.” Rehabilitating older buildings creates twice as many jobs per investment dollar as does new construction.
