CASE STUDY on greening through preservation

Barclay Heritage Square

An entire city block of Edwardian-era houses in Vancouver’s West End was scheduled for demolition for a city park. Instead, Heritage Canada lobbied the City to retain the buildings and create a common green space. Today, Barclay Heritage Square consists of 12 heritage buildings, including the 1893 Roedde House. It serves as an oasis of green amidst surrounding concrete highrises. Heritage Canada, the Vancouver Arts Council and the British Columbia Heritage Trust funded the project.

For more details, check out Heritage Canada’s Advocacy Action Handbook or read Janet Bingham’s More than a House: The Story of Roedde House and Barclay Heritage Square (Vancouver: Roedde House Preservation Society, 1996).
